Doomsday
Directed by Neil Marshall
This is a rare occasion. I have now watched this film twice today. I never do that. Most movies, even my favorites are not films I like to watch multiple times in a single day. This film is not the second film by Neil Marshall, but it's the second from him that I've seen.
If you know me very well, you'll know I LOVED his last film which was 2005's The Descent. That film's premise was very similar to another film that came out about the same time called The Cave. People are in a cave. They end up getting hunted by something. Of course in The Cave it was some stupid monster and looked absolutely ridiculous. It was.
In The Descent however, the things attacking the women are explained partially by the doctor with the group. I won't spoil what she reveals, as you should see it for yourself. I LOVED The Descent, and therefore I was ready for any new films by Marshall. Oddly enough both The Descent and Doomsday had awful looking commercials. Both were edited together in the most stereotypical way and made both films look stupid. I of course saw Roger Ebert's review for The Descent (four stars of four) and decided to check it out.
He was right. It wasn't until Doomsday was on dvd and I looked at the box that I found out it was directed by Neil Marshall. I picked it up as soon as possible. This film takes place in the future where a virus called the "Reaper virus" has infected the people of Scotland. The country decides to build a wall around all of Scotland, thereby cutting off everyone from saving the people of Scotland as well as keeping everyone in this steaming pot just to wait for everyone to die.
25 years later the girl who got out of the country with the military in the last helicopter to leave has become a high ranking special officer who is sent in to stop the big baddies in all sorts of situations. Once it is found that London is now infected with the "Reaper", our hero is sent in to find a possible cure and get out within 46 hours in order to be able to help the people of London. The film evokes memories of some of the greatest post-apocalyptic styled films of all time. Not only does the premise come from Escape From New York and The Road Warrior, it also has touches of other classics like Aliens and one of my favorites The Warriors. Thankfully while this film has nods to these fantastic classics, it forms its own story and has its own fun with it.
The main character, Major Sinclair, is one of the only women I've ever seen in an action film that really looks like she would be able to kick butt like she does in the film. I've seen other films (Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Ultraviolet) with a main female hero that looked ridiculous fighting all of these people and winning. Rhona Mitra looks the part and also has a strength of character that really shines through throughout. This film is violent. Very violent. There are multiple people run over by cars and tanks, as well as a cow. A suicide. At least 4 beheadings (maybe more that I forgot even). People are shot, stabbed, and blown up. A man is even cooked and torn apart and eaten. There are so many crazy things in this film.
All of these things are shown by the way, so if you are squemish about any of this, don't watch it. For the rest of us, you'll love it. You know how when 300 came out everyone was talking about how incredibly awesome that film was? And how violent it was? Well none of those things apply to 300 (quite frankly I didn't like 300 very much). Awesomeness is on full bore in Doomsday however. If you want action going from start to finish, this is the film to see. If you like films with guns, fistfights, explosions, even medieval combat with a knight, as well a fantastic car chase sequence reminiscent of The Road Warrior, then there is no reason for you not to ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS FILM.
Everything in this film reeks of awesome. The pacing is perfect for an action film. There's plenty of room for story, while also continuing forward at a brisk pace, keeping the audience entertained at all possible moments. The film also has music similar to Escape From New York and The Thing. The music is not always but often the synthesized style of music from those older classic films we all know and love. I love this touch of course as it fits the film perfectly. This has become one of my favorite post-apocalyptic films since I first saw it. And I haven't even mentioned that Malcolm McDowell is in the film yet! But seriously there's no reason for you not to see this film if you love any of the films I mentioned as influences (Escape From New York, The Road Warrior, Aliens, The Warriors, etc.).
I give this film
[5/5]
This movie is just relentless FUN FUN FUN. If you enjoy having fun watching a movie then you MUST see this film!! If you're some stupid sourpuss, then go watch Epic Movie you turd. As for me I'll just be enjoying a thrill ride that I'll come back to again and again as the years go on. Smile Go see Doomsday.
P.S. Oh, have I also mentioned that pretty much EVERY woman you see in this film is absolutley GORGEOUS? Rhona Mitra, Nora-Jane Noone, Lee-Anne Liebenberg, and possibly my favorite MyAnna Buring, who looks like an absolute angel. And is the same age as me so that's awesome. Pray that I have a chance to hook up with this British uber-hottie. Razz But yeah seriously, every woman that you see very much of in this film is just beautiful.

ILLegal Alien: Jedi Link of USA.
Of all the muthafuckas in the world, he's the muthafuckest.
This one is a bizarre case. Some places he fits in, others he stands out. No matter where you find him, he'll always be the same guy as he never puts up a facade for any reason. A filmmaker on the rise he has a vast knowledge of useless garbage. If it's in a movie he's seen it. Thanks to the internet he's seen worse. This one is severely scarred by an incomprehension of how retarded people can be. Generally a loner, he knows few, those few don't always support him so he stands on his own.
He is relentless in his pursuit as a filmmaker and refuses to be left out of a business he wants to see improve. He also has ADD which explains the somewhat "all over" nature of his own description.
